Hospital Trip #1: Rebecca

We got a phone call from Rebecca at about 6 a.m. on Sunday February 8.  She said her stomach really hurt and she was throwing up.  This didn't sound like her normal, "I am sick and don't feel good."   I had her talk to Mark.  He had her wake up one of her roommates to take her to the hospital.  The hospital thought the pain was either and appendicitis or an ovarian cyst.  They did a CT scan to find the source of the pain.  It was neither or maybe all of the above PLUS a volvulous (twisted intestine).  They had her into surgery within an hour.  Emily (Mark's sister) went to the hospital and stayed until I could get a flight and get to Utah.

The picture below is what I saw when I arrived.

Rebecca's filters on what she talks about are non-existent when on morphine

The surgeon had originally thought he may have to remove about 5 inches of the intestine.  Instead he was able to untwist the intestine and tack it to Rebecca's abdominal wall to keep it from twisting again.  The surgeon took out Rebecca's appendix while he was operating and also found an ovarian cyst.  Neither were the cause of her pain but the lab found that her appendix was infected.

These are the pictures from the surgeon

Rebecca was only in the hospital one day.  I took her to Aunt Emily's house when she was discharged.  It took almost a whole week of pain meds and sleep to recover.  Rebecca tried to keep up with some of her classwork while recovering.

I was able to work on my schoolwork while Rebecca was sleeping.

This is the evening I took Rebecca back to her apartment to see if she was ready to live on her own again.  She did great!

Rebecca was very blessed that she was able to get the medical help she needed so quickly.  Our family was blessed to have Emily and Joe let us use their house for a week during recovery.
