While we were gone, the big kids watched the little kids. They fed them breakfast and let them play at the playground that was at the campsite.
The little boys learned how to climb the monkey bars. I guess I will have to quit watching them play on the playground. If I watch I will worry and someone will get hurt.
We got to do a small 10 minute ride with the oxen. Did you know that oxen are not a breed of cattle? It just means a steer that is at least 4 years old.
We had a picnic lunch here.
We saw a show called "Just Anna Amanda". It was great! ALL of the kids enjoyed it. We laughed through most of it. I almost think it was the best show we saw.
We drove to Carthage after the show.

This is a statue of Joseph and Hyrum Smith outside of the visitors center at Carthage Jail.

It was really dark so my picture doesn't show all that I wanted it too. This is the jail cell at the top of the stairs at Carthage Jail. After Wilfred Woodruff was shot, they hid him in here under a mattress so the mobs would not kill him.

This is the door that the mob shot when they attacked Joseph & Hyrum Smith, Wilfred Woodruff and John Taylor. The bullet hit Hyrum.

This is the fireplace mantel that was in the room where Joseph and Hyrum were killed.
We spent about an hour in Carthage and then drove back to Nauvoo.

One of the buildings was a print shop where the newspapers were printed.
I took a picture of the cases that the letters were in because this set up is where we get the expression "Upper case and Lower case". The capital letters are in the top or upper boxes and the small letters are in the bottom boxes or lower boxes.

This is where the type set is placed when it is ready for the ink and paper. The process of printing a newspaper was time and labor intensive.
The boys were ready to get some playtime so we went to the Family Life Center. We all had a great time. We learned about making bread in the bustle oven, candle making, cotton spinning, how to weave rugs on a loom, barrel making, rope making, and pottery.
I got the honors of cutting the rope free from the spinning wheels.

Matthew took the rope that we made and tied one end to each of the boys.

They ran around the place dragging Matthew along.
After dinner, we came back to historic nauvoo and saw a show called "Sunset on the Mississippi". That was my second favorite show. The little boys were not interested so they played in the rocks that were on the ground. They were entertained and so were we. One of the songs that they did was a tribute to all of the armed forces for the United States. The brass band played the anthem song for each branch of the military. They had anyone who had served in that branch come up to the stage. The stage filled up pretty quickly.
We played in the field behind the outdoor stadium for a while after the show. That is where I met plenty of Nauvoo chiggers. Mark didn't get a single one.
When we got back to camp, the boys noticed lightening bugs. So Mark took the boys and Rebecca into the field behind our campsite and let them catch lightening bugs. The boys are really into catching bugs so they thought this was really cool.
